Understanding Textured Hair: A Day with Project Afro at Wella Studios
Exploring the rich history and unique structure of Afro hair, Project Afro kicked off their first team day with a deep dive into all things afro. Held at Wella Studios in London, the team was welcomed to a day of learning and experimentation, led by Project Leader and Design Essentials’ International Lead Educator, Patricia Davis, and Design Essentials International Marketing Manager, Sharon Thompson.
The day began with a detailed look into the evolution of Afro hair. The team discussed the meaning behind the term ‘Afro’ and examined how the industry has progressed, highlighting the importance of continued growth and understanding.
Next, the team focused on the science behind textured hair. Patricia Davis and Sharon Thompson explained the structure of Afro hair and emphasized the need for the right products to achieve specific textures and styles. The team had the chance to try out a range of top Design Essentials products and hone their consultation processes.

Emma Mulvihill from The Scissor Psychologist expressed her excitement: “I particularly enjoyed learning the science behind texture. We studied populations around the world and looked at areas learning that in Europe 65-75% of people have textured hair. We delved deeply into hair structure and characteristics, leading us to understand what is happening when hair grows at a detailed scientific level.”
Alexandra Wood from Toni & Guy, Sloane Square London, echoed this sentiment: “It was such a great day learning about the history of textured hair was very inspiring – especially learning why people would wear their hair in different style and covering the science behind hair, which is always refreshing! I also enjoyed the workshop going through all the products seeing what I liked and also what worked with specific styles.”
The event marked an excellent start to Project Afro’s journey, serving as both informative and exciting. The team, consisting of members from various renowned salons, left with a renewed understanding and enthusiasm for textured hair.

Getting to Grips: The Calligraphy Cut Scholarship
The world of hairstyling is ever-evolving, with innovative techniques continually reshaping how we approach hair care and styling. The Calligraphy Cut is one such groundbreaking method, and the recent Calligraphy Cut Scholarship provided an insightful exploration into this unique approach.
The Calligraphy Cut Pen differs greatly from your typical pair of scissors, taking inspiration from the art of flower cutting. Just as diagonally cut flowers have a larger surface area, allowing them to absorb more moisture and stay healthier for longer, the Calligraphy Cut Pen slices hair at a precise 21° angle. Held like a pen, this method enhances the hair’s natural movement and volume while minimizing split ends, resulting in healthier, softer-looking hair.
The Calligraphy Cut Scholarship event was a day dedicated to mastering this technique under the guidance of Calligraphy Cut Mentor, Ainsley Walton. Walton focused on cutting shorter hairstyles, addressing initial challenges faced by the team and offering invaluable tips to refine their cuts.

Rebecca Mills from William & Mary, Hair & Beauty, reflected on the day’s experience: “Our day focused on the Calligraphy Pen on shorter styles! We went through the trend report and what’s in this year, followed by a live model demonstrating the ’70s shag cut and a photoshoot of the model. Practicing the flow haircut, I initially struggled but improved greatly once I got my body position right. It was a great day, really enjoyable, and I took loads away from it.”
The Calligraphy Cut Scholarship team comprised talented individuals, each contributing to the vibrant and collaborative atmosphere:
- Chelsey Stone – Chelsey Stone
- Chris Grimley – Fusion Hair Company
- Gabriella Wain – Tilted Crown Hair Studio
- Jamie-Leigh Bailey – Meraki Hair
- Morgan Graham – MG The Studio
- Rebecca Mills – William & Mary, Hair & Beauty
In summary, the Calligraphy Cut Scholarship was a fabulously informative day, providing hairstylists with the knowledge and skills to elevate their craft using this innovative technique. The event underscored the importance of continuous learning and adapting to new methods in the ever-evolving world of hairdressing.
