The National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF) is thrilled to share the news that Jamie Mettyear, who has been serving as a dedicated board member for several years, has been promoted to the position of Vice President. This is a well-deserved recognition of Jamie’s hard work, commitment, and valuable contributions to the organisation. The NHBF is excited about the continued growth and success that Jamie’s leadership will bring to the organisation in the future.

Nail technicians pay increase letter

In response to the media coverage of more than 5,000 nail technicians across the UK coming together to collectively raise their prices in what is being called “National Nail Price Increase Day”, the Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) has sent an open letter reminding Nail Technician businesses, as well as their trade bodies and membership organisations, of their obligations under competition law, and points readers to advice and guidance published by the CMA.

New employment protections for pregnant women and carers introduced

Parents and carers granted new and improved rights at work, covering leave entitlements and redundancy rules

New legislation, including three Government-backed cross-party Acts, came into force this week. This comes alongside tax cuts of £900 a year for the average worker, an increase to the National Living Wage, and the introduction of free childcare for working parents

Pregnant women and new parents will now receive special treatment in a redundancy situation, as a suite of new laws are introduced – delivering the Government’s plan to support families and back hardworking Brits.

New laws will protect workers by strengthening existing redundancy protections to cover pregnancy and a period of time after parents return to work.

Improvement relief for business rates

Businesses that make certain improvements to their property might be eligible for Improvement Relief on their business rate bill. Improvements must increase the building’s rateable value, have been completed after 1 April 2024, increase the property size, or add new features, such as heating, air conditioning, or CCTV. For guidance on how to qualify, see the Valuation Office Agency’s Ratings Manual and the Government’s website.
