Fellowship for British Hairdressing
Awarded every June, the Fellowship Scholarship is given to a deserving hairdresser of any age who wants to further their learning and shows great promise. The prize is a professional course (for 4 weeks in September) at Sassoon’s Academy (offered in memory of Vidal Sassoon), a tool roll courtesy of Denman Brushes, and travel sponsored by HJ and Professional Hairdresser.
The judging panel were looking for people who wouldn’t usually get this sort of opportunity, and judged on passion rather than skill level alone. The panel this year consisted of Fellowship Chancellor Karine Jackson, Professional Hairdresser editor Nicola Shannon, HJ Publisher Jayne Lewis-Orr, Edward Darley (Sassoon), Jackie Wadeson and Ann Herman.

The winner, Jasmine Connor from Q Hair and Beauty in Chichester, was chosen because of her dynamic personality, passion and willingness to research the industry. Although only 20 and at NVQ level 2, Jasmine has already demonstrated her love of the industry; whilst still at school she went to Cutting Club to learn the basics (a salon initiative to encourage local schoolchildren), she’s part of the Colour Project this year, has undertaken various courses (Clubstar, Men’s courses and been Shortlisted for BHBA Junior of the year).
Anthony Barnes-Smith, owner of Q Hair and Beauty said of Jasmine’s work ethic, “Jasmine is always willing to be involved, she has a desire to master any challenge. The education she has received so far has been shared with the rest of the team. Young stylists like her don’t come along very often; it’s not just work to her, it’s a hobby – she eats, sleeps and drinks it!”
